Feng Shui Home Design for the Holidays

Feng Shui home design teaches how to bring harmony and balance to the home while strengthening energy in the aspects of life where it's needed. The temptation is to find the home's balance and never alter it again. The term "Feng Shui" means "Wind Water." That certainly doesn't mean that home design is carved in stone — holidays bring their own kind of energy and should be acknowledged with colors and symbols. So here are some ways to accomplish that within the rules of Feng Shui home design.

The Holiday Table

The best holiday dinnerware is white china to enhance the appearance and enjoyment of the food; color can be added with napkins and napkin rings. Do not use plastic or paper plates, plates that come from family members that you don't get along with, square plates which represent disunity or plates with a distracting design. Feng Shui home design dictates that the holiday table should be placed in the center of the room and unnecessary furniture should be removed to allow all guests to reach their chairs easily. The hosts should sit at the power position, which faces the door with the wall behind. People who don't get along should be seated on the same side of the table with at least one person between them so that they don't have to look into negative energy. Vulnerable guests should be seated with their backs to a wall for support.

Feng Shui Home Design for Fall

Fall colors can be added to a room's Feng Shui color palette by adding throw pillows to couches and chairs. A wealth cure that symbolizes a bountiful harvest is a silver bowl of red apples, and also silver mirrors that double the bounty. Summer curtains can be replaced by thick drapes of vibrant colors, or the scents of fall can be added by cooking apples and cinnamon or by using candles and oils. Lights should be added or used more often to battle the creeping darkness of fall, using bright and soft lights both to balance yin and yang. Fresh flowers will add life energy and compensate for less time spent outside. Eat seasonal foods, especially red, orange and yellow foods to attain balance with the season.

Holiday Trees

Bringing a real tree into the home for the holidays is in line with Feng Shui home design, as it brings life into the house like fresh flowers, represents the return of life after winter, brings a natural harmonious scent into the home, creates a happy energy, brings nature inside and it carries the energy of the sun, the winter air, animals and birds.
