The Proper Use Of Feng Shui Colors To Balance Energy

Feng shui is a system of aesthetics developed in ancient China that is designed to attract positive qi. The term literally means wind-water in English and refers to the principles of astronomy and geography that guide this practice. It was historically used to determine the placement of a building like a home or a tomb in a way that promotes the flow of positive energy. In addition to placing objects in certain locations, feng shui colors can be used to change the energy in a space.

Color is assigned to precise areas of a structure to promote this positive energy flow. Water, wood, metal, earth and fire are the five elements represented through the use of different colored paint or accessories including curtains, comforters, wall hangings and throw pillows.

Brown, beige, tan and light yellow represent earth and are said to bring stability and good health to the environment. Emphasis should be in the southwest, northeast and center area of the home to have a positive effect on relationships.

A calm sense of well being is what the water element brings to the home, especially when used in the northern part of a building and also the east and southeast. Fountains and aquariums can be added as well as liberal use of blue and black. Water represents abundance and is thought to attract good fortune and wealth.

White and grey are the shades that are associated with metal and represent efficiency, precision and clarity. Feng shui principles call for them to be used in the west, northwest and north areas of a home or office.

The east and southeast should feature shades of green and brown as a symbol of wood. Vitality, strength and growth will be influenced to rid a home of bad luck and bring prosperity instead.

Fire is representative of passion and the efforts and energy poured into pursuing those passions. Bringing balance to the fire element in a space may be achieved with orange, pink, yellow and red prominently displayed in areas of the home that are located in the northeast, southwest and south. Fireplaces, wood burning stoves and heaters should be situated on southern facing walls.

The practice of this ancient art is all about negative energies being effectively blocked. By bringing balance to the five elements through the introduction of color in the proper places can pave the path to prosperity, good health and strong personal relationships.
